Limavady couple Richard and Leona Kane set up the now award-winning company, Broighter Gold 11 years ago, recognising the versatility of rapeseed oil.
Their range of rapeseed oils, which now include infused varieties and can be bought all over Northern Ireland, online and at their on-site farm shop. They sell through a distribution company in ROI to various restaurants and have recently signed up with Liberty’s in London. Their oils are also stocked in Jones the Grocer in United Arab Emirates.
Besides their products, in 2012, Broighter Gold expanded its offering by opening its pressing room as part of a new and exciting tourism trail in Northern Ireland. This initiative is known as Économusée, or working museum, and was founded in Québec in Canada.
The term Économusée means that the company offers a unique visitor experience, inviting you to watch artisans at work, learn about the history of their craft and the heritage of the traditional skills.
As a result of Économusée, and since Broighter Gold is a working farm, you can now see the fields being worked during your visit. April/ May is always the best time of year to see their oilseed rape in bloom.
If you choose to visit in August or September, then you’ll get the chance to see Richard in the combine, harvesting some of the crops. You’ll also get a guide through the process of harvesting the rapeseed oil and a tour of the pressing room and, of course, you’ll not be leaving without a bottle of Broighter Gold Rapeseed Oil to take home and enjoy!
The company has grown into one of the United Kingdom’s best-known and loved rapeseed oil suppliers: a fact which has been reflected in the number of awards that Broighter Gold has accumulated:
- The Blas na hEireann Best Producer in County Derry for 5 years in a row
- Best UK Producer in the UK with Hotel Indigo in London
- Finalist in the British Farming Awards
- Diversification Innovator of the Year (Small to Medium) Business
- Multiple UK Great Taste Awards for quality and outstanding flavours
