Taste Causeway named runner-up in all Ireland Foodie Destination search.
The Causeway Coast and Glens have proven it’s among the very best in a search to find Ireland’s top foodie destination.
The region, represented by Taste Causeway, claimed the runner-up spot in the Ireland-wide competition.
Taste Causeway, which brings together producers, artisans, food tourism providers, and hospitality businesses, was praised for its passionate ethos and partnership approach to creating an unmissable foodie destination.
Sharon Scott, Lead Facilitator for the Taste Causeway Collaborative Growth Network which is supported by Invest NI and Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council said: “As this was our first time to enter these prestigious awards, we were keen to benchmark ourselves and learn from other great foodie destinations. To return as runner up is amazing and a testament to the hard work of our local businesses and stakeholders over the last year. The judges were impressed by our use of digital technology and branding, our collaborative working and strong partnerships but most of all our pride in our place. This award will give us a strong platform to develop even further as a leading foodie destination.”
The Mayor of Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council Councillor Sean Bateson said: “This is a much-deserved endorsement for all of our chefs, producers and food businesses who are a part of Taste Causeway. The variety of produce and food experiences which this region has to offer to make it very special and this will be at the heart of our upcoming Taste Causeway foodie celebration during October featuring a host of food and drink events and locally inspired menus. There’s no better time to explore for yourself what makes our destination so unique.”
Following a rigorous application and on-line voting process, Taste Causeway members and stakeholders welcomed two Foodie Destination judges to the area to showcase its unique food and drink offering. This included a visit to local Économusées and a walking tour of Portrush finishing off with cookery demonstrations at Ocho Tapas. The judges were introduced to the area’s unique food tours and festivals and digital marketing initiatives, including the recently launched Causeway Taste Finder app which allows visitors to access live information on local restaurants, tours, and food and drink experiences.
Celebrity Chef Paula McIntyre, a long-time supporter of local food and drink from the Causeway Coast and Glens said: “National recognition like this is an endorsement of the unique experience that the Causeway Coast and Glens area offers in terms of great food, local produce and a spectacular landscape that contributes to both. My cooking career started in Portrush in the 1980s and it was particularly special to able to show the judges how much our region has evolved as a destination for excellent food and experiences. We’ve always known that our fish, potatoes, carrots, beer, whiskey, and ice cream are world-class - now we’re spreading the word and saying spend time in our place and ‘Taste Causeway’ while you’re here."
Taste Causeway received their award from the Restaurants Association of Ireland at a special event held in Kilkenny.
Speaking at the ceremony, CEO of the Restaurants Association of Ireland, Adrian Cummins said: “I’d like to offer a massive congratulations to Taste Causeway. It’s clear that a huge amount of time and effort has gone into making Causeway Coast and Glens a foodie destination worth visiting and it is clear that it is a very coordinated effort run by people who are passionate about their food and drink sector.
In another exciting development, Taste Causeway is also set to feature in a joint Tourism NI and Failte Ireland autumn TV and social media campaign, encouraging people to visit the Causeway Coast and Glens for a foodie-themed short break.
