Native Seafood - Lir and The Pool
Lir restaurant in Coleraine opened its doors in March 2023. The menu featuring sustainably sourced Irish seafood changes daily depending on what the fishermen, farm and local suppliers have to offer.
The Pool in Portstewart operates on a seasonal basis, opening 7 days a week from 12pm to 7pm (or until sold out!) through the summer and spring taking only walk ins. The Pool sells hot seafood, bakes, coffee and sourdough bread and there is also a fresh fish counter available.
Rebekah and Stevie McCarry began their seafood adventure in January 2020 when they opened their first Native Seafood restaurant at the Coleraine marina. Once the pandemic hit they had to get creative and Native began selling their incredible, local seafood online and delivering door to door which proved very popular with customers.
When restrictions were lifted Native was able to reopen its doors and begin to cook again. Their menu changed every day depending on what the boats brought in that morning and they produced street food inspired seafood dishes such as Monkfish corn dogs, Lobster Rolls and Squid Shawarma.
The restaurant was closed for renovations with a pod placed outside to keep the hot food and fish mongers alive, offering high quality takeaway food.
To keep up with demand The Pool opened in summer 2021 with space for a full fish counter, live music, events, parties, tasting menus and breathtaking sunsets. However, the downside of its location beside the sea meant that The Pool suffered a lot during the winter storms! The Pool has won multiple awards including ‘Best sustainable practices’, ‘Best casual dining’ and ‘Local food heroes’ for Derry and overall ‘Food Heros’ for Ulster by The Restaurant Association of Ireland, ‘Best Casual Dining’ by The Food and Wine Awards, and ‘Best Fish Mongers in NI 2021 + 2022’ by Slow Food UK, McKennas guides and ‘Best Seafood Restaurant in Ireland’ by the Georgina Campbell 2022 awards.
‘Lir’ at the Coleraine Marina opened in Spring 2023 with a state of the art kitchen and prep facility with the ability to offer fish filleting lessons, restaurant, outside bar, fish mongers and deli.
Lir’s vision is to encapsulate everything that Native has offered so far and to offer a seafood experience like no other.
